The town of Clinton said goodbye to an icon. "Mr. Clinton", Gene De Cleene passed away Thursday, May 31st.  Gene was born and raised in Clinton and spent his entire life serving the community.  In 1984 Gene ran for Town Council and held that seat until 2008. He did however, take a 4 year hiatus to serve on the Hunterdon County Board of Elections from 1989-1993.  Gene was a Life Member of the Clinton Fire Department and the Clinton First Aid Squad.

In 2017 Gene became the first recipient of the "Eugene De Cleene Civic Engagement Award", aptly named after Mr. De Cleene. The award was established by the Hunterdon County Democratic Committee and was created in order to annually honor someone who shows genuine passion for their community.
